This animated calendar shows every day of a typical Hawaiian year. Each tiny figure on the map represents about 250 visitors physically present on each island that day. Watch the islands fill in summer, empty in early autumn, then fill again over Christmas and New Year. The numbers are honest — drawn from Hawai‘i Tourism Authority Average Daily Census data, averaged across four “clean” reference years (2018, 2019, 2022, 2024). The years that aren’t representative — COVID’s 2020-21 and Maui’s 2023 wildfire year — were left out so the picture matches what an average month looks like today.
