Castle Halii Kai at Waikoloa
Overview
Set on 29 oceanfront acres within the Waikoloa Beach Resort, Castle Halii Kai is a gated condo community that combines the space and privacy of a luxury townhome with resort-caliber amenities. The 192 two-story units — spread across 24 low-rise buildings — feature full gourmet kitchens, in-unit laundry, and furnished lanais, making this one of the most spacious accommodation options on the Kohala Coast.
The resort's exclusive Ocean Club is the heart of the guest experience: a lagoon-style saltwater pool with cascading waterfall, a children's wading pool, a heated sandy-bottom lava rock spa, and the Ocean Club Bar & Grill — all with 180-degree ocean views. The setting is quintessential Kohala Coast: sunny skies, black lava rock, and warm tropical breezes.
Located adjacent to the Hilton Waikoloa Village and bordering the Waikoloa Beach Golf Course, Halii Kai puts you in the center of the Big Island's premier resort corridor. Queens MarketPlace and Kings Shops are nearby for dining and shopping, and the beautiful white sand beach at Anaehoomalu Bay is a short drive within the resort complex.
Accommodation Options
Every unit at Halii Kai is a two-story townhome-style villa — no cramped hotel rooms here. Two-Bedroom Villas (approximately 1,204 sq ft) feature a king bed in the master and twins or a double in the second bedroom, with two full bathrooms including a jetted tub in the master bath. Three-Bedroom Villas (approximately 1,930 sq ft) add a third bedroom and bathroom, sleeping up to eight guests.
All units include full gourmet kitchens with full-size refrigerator, stovetop, microwave, and dishwasher — everything you need for self-catering. A full-size washer and dryer, central air conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and complimentary WiFi round out the residential amenities. Furnished lanais offer views ranging from tropical gardens to the golf course to the ocean, depending on your unit's location.
Note that units are individually owned and managed by different companies, so decor and condition can vary. Castle Resorts manages approximately 56 units in the hotel rental program, while other management companies handle additional units.
Pools, Beaches & Activities
The Ocean Club anchors the resort experience with a stunning lagoon-style saltwater pool featuring a multi-level cascading waterfall design. The heated lava rock spa has a unique sandy bottom and makes a great spot for sunset unwinding, while the keiki wading pool keeps little ones safely entertained.
The pool deck commands 180-degree ocean views — during winter months (December through April), whale watching from the poolside loungers is a genuine highlight. The Ocean Club Bar & Grill provides poolside food and drink service.
While the resort sits on an oceanfront lava rock shoreline that isn't suitable for swimming, the Kohala Coast's best beaches are nearby. Anaehoomalu Bay (A-Bay), with its calm sandy beach and excellent snorkeling, is a few minutes' drive within the Waikoloa Beach Resort. Hapuna Beach — consistently rated among Hawaii's finest — is about 15 minutes north.
Dining
The exclusive Ocean Club Bar & Grill serves Halii Kai guests with breakfast buffets, lunch, appetizers, and cocktails Monday through Saturday. The restaurant features fresh, locally sourced cuisine and generous portions in an oceanfront poolside setting — guests consistently praise both the food quality and the value.
Beyond the resort gates, the adjacent Queens MarketPlace and Kings Shops offer diverse dining options within minutes, from casual eateries to sit-down restaurants. The broader Waikoloa Beach Resort and Kohala Coast corridor gives you access to resort restaurants at the Hilton Waikoloa Village, Marriott Waikoloa, and other nearby properties.
With a full kitchen in every unit, many guests enjoy preparing their own meals using ingredients from nearby grocery stores or the local farmers' markets.
Golf
Halii Kai literally borders the Waikoloa Beach Golf Course, and golf course views come with many units. Hotel guests receive discounted green fees of $90 per round (up to 50% off regular rates), with club rentals available for $45.
The course offers three flexible 9-hole layouts — Kings Nine, Lakes Nine, and Beach Nine — that can be combined for a full 18-hole round. The coastal setting features ocean views, lava rock hazards, and the Kohala Coast's famously sunny weather.
Additional championship courses are nearby on the Kohala Coast, including the Mauna Lani Golf Course and Hapuna Golf Course, both within a 15-20 minute drive.
Nearby Attractions
The Waikoloa Beach Resort complex offers plenty without needing to drive far. Queens MarketPlace and Kings Shops provide dining, boutique shopping, and art galleries within minutes. The Hilton Waikoloa Village next door offers its own array of restaurants and activities.
Anaehoomalu Bay is the nearest swimming beach, perfect for snorkeling, kayaking, and sunset viewing. Further afield, Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area (15 minutes north) is consistently ranked among the top beaches in Hawaii — and the world.
The Kohala Coast is also home to the Puako Petroglyph Archaeological Preserve, where ancient Hawaiian rock carvings dot a lava field trail. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is about a 2-hour drive, making it possible as a day trip from Waikoloa.
Tips & Good to Know
This is a gated community — you'll receive access codes via email 72 hours before arrival. The front desk operates 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, so plan accordingly if you're arriving late and arrange access codes in advance.
Because units are individually owned and managed by different companies (Castle Resorts, South Kohala Management, KBM Resorts, and others), the booking experience and unit condition can vary. Castle Resorts manages the Ocean Club amenities and front desk regardless of which company you book through.
The $25/day resort fee covers Ocean Club access, parking, pool, fitness center, and towel service. One parking space per unit is included. The Kohala Coast's sunny climate means you'll rarely encounter rain — sunscreen and a hat are more important than an umbrella.
