Overview

The Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa sprawls across 50 oceanfront acres on Kauai's sunny south shore, directly adjacent to Keoneloa Bay (Shipwreck Beach). As the only Grand Hyatt in Hawaii, it occupies an elevated luxury tier above the state's numerous Hyatt Regency properties, delivering AAA Four-Diamond service on a scale that few Hawaiian resorts can match. Originally opened in 1990 and comprehensively renovated through 2024, the resort combines dramatic natural beauty with world-class amenities.

The resort's most distinctive feature is its extraordinary water complex: five swimming pools, a 1.5-acre sand-bottom saltwater lagoon, a lazy river with waterfalls and cave grottos, and a 150-foot waterslide — an aquatic playground that rivals any in Hawaii. The 45,000-square-foot Anara Spa is the largest on Kauai, and the adjacent Poipu Bay Golf Course hosted the PGA Grand Slam of Golf for 13 consecutive years.

Designed by WATG architects to integrate with Kauai's natural landscape, the resort avoids the generic tropical luxury aesthetic in favor of low-rise architecture that respects the island's character. The property's Poipu location on the south shore means consistently sunny weather, even when the north shore is shrouded in rain — a significant practical advantage for visitors seeking guaranteed pool and beach days.

Accommodation Options

The resort offers 605 rooms including 42 suites, all refreshed in a comprehensive 2024 renovation that updated every room while retaining the Hawaiian character that defines the property. Standard rooms at 500 square feet feature private lanais, marble bathrooms with double vanities, walk-in showers, flat-screen TVs, Nespresso coffee makers, and waterproof room-key wristbands — a practical touch for a resort centered on its pools.

View categories include Garden View, Ocean View, Pool View, and connecting room options that combine to 1,000 square feet. The suite tier ranges from Pool View Suites (850 sq ft) with walk-in wet rooms and free-standing French tubs, to Ocean View Suites (850-1,050 sq ft) with separate bedrooms and sitting areas, up to the Presidential Suite at nearly 3,000 square feet. The Ali'i Suite is specifically designed for families, sleeping six guests with a king bed, queen sleeper sofa, and trundle bed.

Standard in-room amenities include Coco Mango bath products, bathrobes, electronics charging station, beverage chiller, free WiFi, and in-room safe. For Hyatt loyalists, the resort is Category 8 in the World of Hyatt program (35,000-45,000+ points per night depending on season), and the Grand Club lounge is well-regarded for its breakfast and dinner offerings.

Pools, Beaches & Activities

The Grand Hyatt Kauai's water complex is its crown jewel and one of the most elaborate in all of Hawaii. The multi-level main pool features a central hot tub island, water volleyball, and water basketball. A 150-foot waterslide winds through lava rock formations, and a lazy river lined with lava rock weaves downhill past waterfalls, quiet seating nooks, and cave grottos — it is genuinely entertaining for both children and adults.

The resort's most unique aquatic feature is its 1.5-acre sand-bottom saltwater lagoon, offering a beach-like swimming experience with floating chairs and kayaks available. This is particularly valuable because the adjacent Shipwreck Beach, while spectacular, has strong currents and is generally not safe for swimming. An adult-only quiet pool offers a more serene experience with umbrella-shaded loungers and cabanas for rent. A separate lap pool at Anara Spa is included with treatments of 60 minutes or more.

Waterproof wristband room keys mean you can move freely between pool, beach, and restaurant without managing a traditional key card. On land, the resort offers complimentary lei making, hula lessons, ukulele lessons, and fitness classes. Tennis courts, mountain biking, and guided cliff walks along Shipwreck Beach round out the activities. The on-site luau runs Wednesday and Sunday evenings.

Spa & Wellness

The 45,000-square-foot Anara Spa is the largest spa on Kauai and one of the most architecturally distinctive in Hawaii. Its open-air design allows trade winds and natural sunlight to flow through treatment rooms that open directly to tropical gardens, creating an immersive environment that most enclosed resort spas cannot match. The signature Garden Hale bungalows — private outdoor treatment pavilions surrounded by lush vegetation — are particularly popular for couples.

The treatment menu includes Mana Lomi massage (Hawaiian-style), facials including the Hawaiian Ali'i Facial, body scrubs, detoxifying wraps, FloatPod treatments, and full salon services. The "Day of Bliss" package combines a 90-minute massage with a 90-minute facial, lunch, and a gift. Couples can book side-by-side treatments in the private Garden Hale bungalows.

Spa facilities include a 24-hour fitness center with Life Fitness equipment, an open-air yoga studio, dry sauna, steam sauna, whirlpools, cold plunge, outdoor lava rock showers, and a lap pool. Treatments of 60 minutes or more include access to spa lounges, lap pool, and CocoMango products. Welcome amenities include iced hibiscus tea and light snacks. Yoga and fitness classes are included in the resort fee.

Dining

The resort operates seven dining venues spanning casual poolside fare to Kauai's most romantic fine dining. Tidepools is the crown jewel — thatched-roof bungalows floating above a koi-filled lagoon at the base of a waterfall, serving modern island cuisine with macadamia nut-crusted fish and grilled ahi. Salad greens come from the resort's on-site hydroponic garden. It is widely considered the most romantic restaurant on Kauai. Reservations are essential.

Stevenson's Sushi & Spirits offers Japanese-inspired cuisine at a striking 24-foot koa wood bar, with Chef Jin's sushi creations alongside an extensive whiskey, cognac, and wine selection. Ilima Terrace serves breakfast buffet and lunch surrounded by waterfalls and koi ponds. Seaview Terrace provides morning coffee and fresh pastries. Hale Nalu, the poolside surf shack, serves fish tacos, burgers, smoothies, and shave ice.

The Grand Hyatt Kauai Luau runs Wednesday and Sunday evenings with a Hawaiian buffet and traditional Polynesian dance performance. For the ultimate romantic experience, a starlit beachside dinner for two can be arranged on the sand. In-room dining is available for private lanai dining.

Golf

The Poipu Bay Golf Course, designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. and opened in 1991, is best known as the home of the PGA Grand Slam of Golf from 1994 to 2006, where Tiger Woods alone won seven times. The 18-hole championship layout stretches across 210 oceanfront acres, carved from a rolling plateau eight stories above the Pacific, delivering some of the most dramatic ocean-view golf in Hawaii.

The signature hole is the par-4 16th at 501 yards, playing along ocean cliffs with nothing but blue Pacific on your right. Holes 15, 16, and 17 trace the coastline in a stretch that rivals any finishing run in Hawaiian golf. The course offers GPS-equipped carts, a pro shop, locker rooms, a full practice facility, and lessons. A complimentary golf shuttle runs from the hotel (included in resort fee).

Pricing is flexible with several options: the full 18 at standard green fees, the "Ocean Eleven" package (holes 8-18 for $165), the "7 Hole Stretch" (holes 1-7 for $110), or a 3-round package at $585. Club rentals start at $80. For serious golfers, the combination of PGA-grade course design, ocean vistas, and a luxury resort steps away makes this one of the premier golf destinations in the Pacific.

Nearby Attractions

The resort's Poipu location on Kauai's south shore provides access to the island's sunniest weather and several of its best attractions. Poipu Beach, consistently ranked among America's best beaches, is approximately a five-minute drive and offers excellent swimming, snorkeling, and frequent monk seal and green sea turtle sightings. The resort itself sits adjacent to Shipwreck Beach — not ideal for swimming due to strong currents, but spectacular for walking, tide pool exploration, and cliff views.

The Mahaulepu Heritage Trail begins nearby and follows dramatic coastline past the Makauwahi sinkhole, one of Kauai's most important archaeological sites. The National Tropical Botanical Garden's Allerton and McBryde Gardens are a short drive west, showcasing rare tropical plants in the stunning Lawai Valley. Old Koloa Town, Hawaii's first sugar plantation settlement, offers shops, restaurants, and history just ten minutes away.

For bigger adventures, Waimea Canyon is approximately 45 minutes west, offering Hawaii's most dramatic inland scenery with multiple hiking trails and lookouts. Na Pali Coast boat tours and helicopter flights can be arranged through the concierge. The resort's south shore position also means it's the closest major resort to the west side of Kauai, saving significant driving time for canyon and Na Pali excursions.

Tips & Good to Know

For pool enthusiasts, arrive early to secure prime spots at the adult-only quiet pool — cabana rentals are available but the best uncovered loungers go fast. The lazy river and waterslide alone can keep children (and adults) entertained for entire days, so don't over-plan your first day. Waterproof wristband keys are a genuinely useful feature that other resorts should copy.

For dining, reserve Tidepools early — it is consistently one of the hardest reservations on Kauai, and the setting above the koi lagoon at sunset is worth the advance planning. The Wednesday and Sunday luau is a solid on-site option, especially for families who don't want to drive after dark. The Grand Club lounge is an excellent perk for Hyatt Globalist members.

Regarding the beach, know that Shipwreck Beach is not a swimming beach. It's stunning to look at, great for walks and tide pools, but the currents are strong. Poipu Beach is a five-minute drive for safe swimming and snorkeling. The resort's saltwater lagoon effectively solves this — it provides a beach-like swimming experience right on property. The resort fee is $55/night (self-parking included, valet $40). For Hyatt loyalists, the resort moved to Category 8 in March 2025, so points bookings now require 35,000-45,000+ points per night.
