Halekulani
Overview
Halekulani — Hawaiian for "House Befitting Heaven" — has been Waikiki's standard-bearer for refined luxury since its current incarnation opened in 1984. Spread across five low-rise buildings on five oceanfront acres, the hotel occupies one of the most desirable positions on Waikiki Beach, yet its intimate scale (453 rooms) and impeccable service create an atmosphere worlds apart from the high-rise bustle surrounding it.
The property holds AAA Five Diamond and Forbes Four-Star ratings, and its signature restaurant La Mer is the only dining establishment in Hawaii to hold both Forbes Five-Star and AAA Five Diamond awards. But Halekulani isn't about collecting accolades — it's about a certain kind of experience. The rooms are decorated in the hotel's signature "seven shades of white," creating spaces that feel simultaneously sophisticated and serene. Deep soaking tubs, private lanais, Vera Wang-designed suites, and welcome fruit bowls with signature chocolates reflect an attention to detail that borders on obsessive.
Following a comprehensive renovation completed in 2021 (the hotel's first full closure since opening), every room, public space, and dining venue has been refreshed. The legendary SpaHalekulani also underwent a complete reimagining in 2024, emerging with new suite-style treatment rooms and spa butler service. Seven on-site dining venues — from La Mer's exquisite French cuisine to the sunset hula and live Hawaiian music at House Without A Key — make Halekulani as much a dining destination as a hotel.
Accommodation Options
Halekulani's 453 rooms span five low-rise buildings across the five-acre oceanfront property, all refreshed in the 2021 renovation. Every room features the hotel's signature "seven shades of white" palette, private lanai, deep soaking tub, glass-enclosed shower, marble vanity, complimentary WiFi, mini-fridge with bottled water, and in-room safe. Notably, rooms do not include coffeemakers — an intentional choice that encourages guests to visit the dining venues or order room service.
Standard rooms range from 419 to 485 square feet, starting with Garden Courtyard rooms overlooking the property's lush grounds. Ocean View rooms offer angled ocean vistas, while Oceanfront rooms face the Pacific directly. The Diamond Head Ocean Front rooms on floors 5-16 command sweeping views of Diamond Head and the coastline, with the Prime rooms on the highest floors delivering the most dramatic panoramas.
Suites range from the Junior Ocean View Suite to the extraordinary Vera Wang-designed Halekulani Suites, available in one- and two-bedroom configurations. The Royal Suite stretches over 2,135 square feet with a full living room, dining area, and unobstructed ocean views. For the ultimate Halekulani experience, the two-bedroom Diamond Head Suite offers the most expansive accommodations in the property.
Pools, Beaches & Activities
Halekulani's pool is not just a place to swim — it's a work of art. The heated saltwater pool measures 46 by 82 feet and features an intricate mosaic of a Cattleya orchid on its floor, crafted from 1.2 million pieces of hand-cut South African glass tiles. The orchid design, visible from the upper-floor rooms, has become one of the most photographed hotel pools in the world.
Poolside service runs from 6:30 AM to sunset daily, and the atmosphere is serene and adult-focused — no floats or balls are permitted. Earl's at House Without A Key, the pool bar, serves drinks and light bites throughout the day. While Halekulani has just one pool, the emphasis is on quality over quantity.
The resort's beach access is equally refined. Halekulani fronts a relatively quiet stretch of Waikiki Beach, with beach chairs and towel service provided for guests. The gentle waves are suitable for swimming and wading, and the hotel can arrange surfing lessons, outrigger canoe rides, and other water activities through local providers. A fitness center is available for guests who prefer a land-based workout.
Spa & Wellness
SpaHalekulani reopened in mid-2024 following a complete reimagining that introduced three new suite-style treatment rooms, spa butler service, and modernized facilities throughout. The spa draws on both Hawaiian healing traditions and contemporary wellness techniques, offering treatments in an elegant oceanfront setting.
The spa menu includes traditional Lomi Lomi massage, hot stone therapy, aromatherapy, and signature facials using premium skincare products. The newly designed suite-style treatment rooms provide a more private, luxurious experience than typical spa settings, with dedicated lounging areas and personalized attention from spa butlers. Couples' treatments are available and particularly popular among the resort's honeymooning guests. The fitness center, open 24 hours, complements the wellness offerings with cardio and strength equipment.
Dining
Dining at Halekulani is a destination in itself, with seven on-site venues that span from Hawaii's most awarded fine dining to one of Waikiki's most beloved casual traditions.
La Mer, perched on the second floor overlooking the ocean, serves exquisite French cuisine with Hawaiian and Japanese influences. It is the only restaurant in Hawaii to hold both Forbes Five-Star and AAA Five Diamond awards, and its tasting menus with wine pairings remain among the most sought-after dining experiences in the islands. Orchids, just below La Mer, offers coastal Italian-inspired cuisine in a more relaxed ocean-view setting, serving breakfast, lunch, and Sunday brunch.
House Without A Key may be Halekulani's most beloved venue — an open-air restaurant and bar where former Miss Hawaii winners perform traditional hula to live Hawaiian music as the sun sets over the Pacific. It is, for many, the quintessential Waikiki experience. Lewers Lounge delivers a more intimate evening with craft cocktails and live jazz in an art-deco-inspired setting. L'Aperitif Cocktail Bar, The Veranda (serving afternoon high tea), and Earl's pool bar round out the lineup. Across the street, the sister property Halepuna Waikiki adds the Halekulani Bakery and UMI by Vikram Garg to the dining portfolio.
Nearby Attractions
Halekulani's position on Kalia Road places it at the quieter western end of Waikiki, just a short walk from Fort DeRussy Beach Park — one of the widest, least crowded stretches of sand in the area. The International Market Place and Royal Hawaiian Center are within a 10-minute walk, offering extensive shopping and dining options.
For cultural excursions, the Honolulu Museum of Art is a 15-minute drive, while Iolani Palace — the only royal palace in the United States — and the Hawaii State Capitol are in nearby downtown Honolulu. Diamond Head crater trail is about a 15-minute drive and offers one of Oahu's most rewarding short hikes with panoramic views.
Day trips from this central Waikiki base include Hanauma Bay for snorkeling (30 minutes east), Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona Memorial (30 minutes west), and the North Shore's big-wave beaches (about an hour north). The hotel's concierge team is exceptionally well-connected and can arrange private tours, charter boats, helicopter flights, and exclusive experiences across the island.
Tips & Good to Know
For the best experience, request a Diamond Head Ocean Front Prime room on floors 12-16 — these deliver the most dramatic views in the property. Halekulani is known for its "seven shades of white" aesthetic, which creates a calm, gallery-like atmosphere, but it may feel understated compared to more colorful Hawaiian resorts.
Sunset at House Without A Key is unmissable — arrive by 5:30 PM to secure a good table for the hula and live music performance. La Mer reservations should be booked well in advance, especially for Friday and Saturday evenings. The afternoon high tea at The Veranda is a wonderful mid-afternoon ritual.
The resort fee situation is worth noting: Halekulani does not charge a traditional resort fee, instead including WiFi, fitness center access, and many amenities in the room rate — a refreshing approach in Waikiki. Self-parking runs about $60 per day; valet is available. The hotel provides a Hospitality Suite for guests arriving early or departing late, with showers, a lounge, and luggage storage — a thoughtful touch for long-haul travelers. Halekulani is about 20 minutes from HNL airport without traffic, but the hotel can arrange private car transfers for a seamless arrival.
