The Lodge at Kukui’ula
Overview
The Lodge at Kukui'ula occupies a singular position among Hawaii's luxury accommodations. Rather than a conventional resort hotel, it is a collection of 40 private bungalows, cottages, and villas scattered throughout a 1,000-acre gated residential community on Kauai's sun-drenched south shore. Guests receive full access to The Club at Kukui'ula, a members-only private club with a staggering suite of amenities including an 18-hole championship golf course, an 18,000-square-foot spa, five pools, a 10-acre working farm, and two restaurants.
What truly sets The Lodge apart is the sheer breadth of its experiential offerings. Guests can harvest tropical fruit from the on-site organic farm before breakfast, play a world-ranked Tom Weiskopf golf course with ocean views on every hole, take a guided sailing canoe ride along the South Shore in the afternoon, and finish with a Chef's Table dinner featuring ingredients pulled from the garden hours earlier. The property sits just minutes from the Spouting Horn blowhole, the Shops at Kukui'ula, and Poipu Beach, yet the gates of the community create a feeling of seclusion that is difficult to find elsewhere on the island.
Formerly a "Destination by Hyatt" property, it transitioned to CoralTree Residence Collection management in February 2024. While World of Hyatt points are no longer accepted, the quality of the experience remains firmly at the five-star level. The community was originally developed by Alexander & Baldwin and is now owned by Brue Baukol Capital Partners, who acquired the entire 1,000-acre community for $183.5 million in 2021.
Accommodation Options
The Lodge offers three distinct accommodation styles, all designed in a Hawaiian plantation-inspired architectural idiom with modern luxury finishes. Club Bungalows are private one- to three-bedroom sanctuaries ideal for couples or small groups, featuring pillowtop beds, deep soaking tubs, and private outdoor garden showers. The interiors are soundproofed and air-conditioned, with fully equipped kitchens, washer/dryers, free WiFi, and complimentary bottled water. Select bungalows offer commanding ocean views — Bungalow 7 in particular is a two-story unit with panoramic views from the upstairs master suite and a private firepit on the lanai.
Club Cottages embody classic Kauai plantation charm with two- or three-bedroom layouts that balance cozy seclusion with easy access to the Clubhouse. These are thoughtfully appointed with expansive living areas, open-concept kitchens, outdoor garden showers, and private firepits. The crown jewels of the collection are the four-bedroom Club Villas, which feature a three-bedroom main house connected to a detached one-bedroom ohana (guest cottage), with a private 10-by-20-foot plunge pool and full outdoor kitchen.
The villas are built in Hawaii's signature indoor/outdoor living style, with pocket doors in the great room that open the entire living space to flow seamlessly onto the lanai. Every bathroom features a private lava rock outdoor shower. Rates start around $529 per night for the smaller units, climbing substantially for the villas.
Pools, Beaches & Activities
The Club at Kukui'ula delivers one of the most impressive pool complexes on Kauai, with five outdoor swimming pools, two hot tubs, a children's pool, and a waterslide. The centerpiece is a stunning infinity-edge serenity pool with panoramic ocean views, flanked by saline beach-entry lagoon pools with a cascading waterfall feature. The pool area is consistently praised as beautiful, uncrowded, and heated to a comfortable temperature — a welcome departure from the packed pool decks at larger Kauai resorts.
Beyond the pools, the activity roster is extraordinary. The 10-acre organic farm offers hands-on harvesting of tropical fruits, herbs, citrus, and vegetables. A stocked lake provides bass fishing from kayaks or the shore. There are two outdoor tennis courts, pickleball courts, an archery range, croquet on manicured lawns, and a family game room in the Clubhouse. Huaka'i Outfitters, the resort's in-house adventure team, coordinates surfing lessons, guided snorkeling, kayaking, ATV treks through Kipu Ranch, and tubing through old sugar plantation irrigation canals.
The resort's 32-foot Yellowfin boat, the Mahealani, is available for customized fishing excursions, whale watching, or sunset cruises. For those who want to connect with Hawaiian culture, there are lei-making workshops, traditional sailing canoe rides aboard the Kailele, storytelling sessions led by kupuna (elders), and sunrise and sunset ceremonies. While the property is not directly beachfront, Kukui'ula Beach Park is nearby and Poipu Beach is approximately 2.5 miles away.
Spa & Wellness
The Hi'ilani Spa — its name means "to be held in the arms of heaven" — is an 18,000-square-foot wellness sanctuary enclosed within lava rock walls and surrounded by lush meditation gardens. Six treatment rooms include private indoor/outdoor spaces for couples, each equipped with outdoor showers, soaking tubs, and Hawaiian pune'e daybeds. The spa's signature experience is the Water Ritual, offered before all treatments: a carefully sequenced circuit of dry sauna, cool shower, glass-walled steam room, cool shower, outdoor hot tub, cold plunge, and hot tub again.
Treatments draw on the property's own botanical gardens and 10-acre farm, incorporating locally grown herbs and flowers into custom tonics, juices, and body treatments. The service menu includes deep-tissue, hot stone, sports, and Swedish massages, along with aromatherapy, hydrotherapy, reflexology, acupuncture, and aesthetician services.
Adjacent to the spa, the TechnoGym-equipped fitness center sits in a breezy indoor/outdoor environment with ocean views. Peloton bikes are available, and certified trainers offer one-on-one fitness assessments. The open-air movement studio hosts over 30 classes per week including yoga, barre, Pilates, cross-training, and advanced swim sessions. Day-use spa access is $125 per person (complimentary when booking a treatment). The spa is reserved for guests 18 and older.
Dining
Dining at The Lodge centers on two restaurants plus a complimentary daily continental breakfast served from 7:00 to 9:00 AM at the Clubhouse. The flagship 'Umeke Kitchen + Bar occupies a prime spot inside the Clubhouse with sweeping views over the Great Lawn down to Kukui'ula Harbor and Spouting Horn. Executive Chef Ben Takahashi practices a "Kauai Elevated" approach to Hawaiian Regional cuisine, sourcing directly from the on-site 10-acre farm, local fishermen, and island ranchers.
Breakfast standouts include Kukui'ula banana pancakes with coconut macadamia nut sauce and the Kuk's bento with miso butterfish. The dinner menu rotates throughout the week with family-style menus, premium proteins, omakase-style tastings, and elevated surf-and-turf nights. Every Thursday features a Chef's Table four-course prix fixe dinner with sommelier wine pairings. 'Umeke is open for breakfast Tuesday through Sunday and dinner Tuesday through Saturday.
The Makai Grill + Bar provides casual poolside dining with farm-fresh dishes — poke bowls, musubis, fresh salads, and sandwiches. Private Chef Events can be arranged under the landmark Earpod tree at The Farm or in guests' own lodgings for a fully customized ocean-to-table, farm-to-fork experience. Guests will also find excellent restaurants at the nearby Shops at Kukui'ula and in Old Koloa Town, both just minutes away.
Golf
The Club at Kukui'ula's 18-hole championship golf course is one of the finest in Hawaii, ranked seventh-best in the state by Golf Digest (2025-26). Designed by British Open champion Tom Weiskopf and opened in 2011 on the site of a former sugar cane plantation, the par-72 course plays 7,028 yards from the championship tees with a rating of 74.4 and a slope of 133. Every hole offers ocean views, though the Pacific never actually comes into play. Paspalum-turf fairways are flanked by brilliant white sand bunkers filled with imported Cambodian sand.
The front nine winds gently through the lowlands, building from a breezy 420-yard opener to the number-one handicap hole at the uphill 452-yard fifth. The back nine delivers dramatic elevation changes, including the driveable 320-yard par-four 14th with nothing but open blue ocean behind the green — widely cited as the most memorable hole on the course. The finishing stretch brings four demanding holes playing into the prevailing trade winds, capped by a reachable 504-yard par-five 18th where water guards the green.
Green fees for Lodge guests are $315. The course is welcoming to families of all ages, and weekly golf clinics and instruction are available. Nearby Poipu Bay Golf Course (home of the former PGA Grand Slam of Golf) provides a second 18-hole option for those who want to play 36 in a day.
Nearby Attractions
The Lodge's location on Kauai's sunny south shore puts guests within easy reach of some of the island's most celebrated attractions. The Spouting Horn blowhole is just one mile away, where ocean swells force seawater through a natural lava tube with a dramatic spray. The Shops at Kukui'ula are a half-mile away, hosting the weekly Kauai Culinary Market every Wednesday afternoon alongside boutique shops and restaurants. Poipu Beach, once named the best beach in America, lies 2.5 miles south and offers excellent swimming, snorkeling, and sea turtle sightings. Historic Old Koloa Town is a five-minute drive.
For nature lovers, the McBryde and Allerton Gardens (part of the National Tropical Botanical Garden) are just three miles west, showcasing rare tropical plants in a stunning valley setting. The Mahaulepu Heritage Trail begins at Shipwreck's Beach and follows dramatic coastline past the Makauwahi sinkhole. Farther afield, Waimea Canyon — the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific" — and Koke'e State Park offer spectacular hiking with canyon rim trails and sweeping ocean panoramas.
On the water, Kukui'ula Harbor serves as the departure point for Na Pali Coast boat tours, snorkeling excursions, and whale watching (seasonal, December-April). Wailua Falls, the 173-foot cascade made famous by the opening credits of Fantasy Island, is a scenic drive to the island's east side.
Tips & Good to Know
The best units to book depend on your priorities. For couples seeking romance and ocean views, request one of the upper-level bungalows with ocean-facing lanais — Bungalow 7 in particular is the only two-story unit and offers commanding views from the upstairs master bedroom. For families or groups wanting the ultimate luxury experience, the four-bedroom Club Villas with private plunge pools and outdoor kitchens are unmatched on the island. Cottages offer the best value for families who want multiple bedrooms and classic plantation charm.
Kauai's south shore is the sunniest and driest part of the island, making Poipu a solid year-round destination, but the best weather typically runs April through October. Be aware that the property transitioned from Hyatt to CoralTree management in February 2024, so World of Hyatt points and elite benefits no longer apply. The daily destination fee (15%) covers continental breakfast, farm access, fitness center, parking, Wi-Fi, and weekly events — but spa access ($125/day) and golf ($315/round) are separate charges.
Stock up your full kitchen at Koloa's grocery stores to save on dining, and take advantage of the complimentary produce locker at the Clubhouse stocked with fresh fruit and vegetables from The Farm. Book Huaka'i Outfitters excursions early, especially the Mahealani boat trips and sailing canoe rides, as they fill quickly.
