Overview

The Royal Sonesta Kaua'i Resort Lihue is an 800-acre beachfront resort situated directly on Kalapaki Bay, one of the most sheltered and swimmable beaches on Kauai's east shore. Holding an AAA Four Diamond rating, the property occupies a storied piece of Hawaiian hospitality real estate — it first opened as the extravagant Westin Kauai in 1987, was rebuilt as the Kauai Marriott after Hurricane Iniki devastated it in 1992, and was reborn once more as a Royal Sonesta flagship in March 2021.

Following a comprehensive multi-million-dollar renovation completed in 2025, the resort has emerged as a thoroughly modernized destination that balances its original architectural grandeur with contemporary island elegance. The renovation redesigned all guest rooms with custom hardwood finishes and kapa-print accents, revitalized the open-air lobby with ocean views, and added new dining and bar concepts.

What sets this resort apart is its sheer scale combined with convenience. It boasts Hawaii's largest single-level swimming pool at 26,000 square feet, sits just two miles from Lihue Airport with a complimentary shuttle, and serves as a launchpad for exploring the entire island. The east-shore location puts both Waimea Canyon and the Na Pali Coast within a day-trip drive, while Kalapaki Bay's calm, cove-protected waters offer immediate water activities right outside the lobby doors.

Accommodation Options

The resort offers 356 recently renovated guest rooms and suites spread across the property, all featuring contemporary island-inspired decor with custom hardwood finishes, polished lava-stone elements, and kapa-print accents. Standard rooms range from 332 to 520 square feet, while suites span from approximately 1,000 to 2,300 square feet. Every room includes deluxe bedding with down comforters and designer duvets, his-and-her robes and slippers, a Keurig coffee maker stocked with local Kauai Coffee, a mini-fridge, a smart TV, and air conditioning.

View categories include Garden View, Pool View, and Ocean View, with "Preferred" designations for higher-floor ocean-facing rooms. The Preferred Ocean View rooms at 463 square feet feature private balconies with direct ocean sightlines and are among the most popular bookings. For families or those wanting more space, the One-Bedroom Suites at roughly 1,000 square feet offer a separate living area with a dining table seating eight, dual balconies overlooking both the pool and Kalapaki Beach.

The resort's top-tier offering is the expansive two-level suite at approximately 2,300 square feet, featuring a king bedroom on the upper level, a separate living area with wet bar and kitchenette, soaking tub, and panoramic ocean views from dual balconies. Bed configurations across categories include king and two-queen options. Note that some ocean view rooms do not include a balcony — guests seeking that feature should confirm at booking.

Pools, Beaches & Activities

The centerpiece of the resort is Hawaii's largest single-level outdoor pool — a 26,000-square-foot chrysanthemum-shaped pool with each "petal" flowing into the next, creating distinct swimming zones connected by gentle currents. The pool complex includes five whirlpool hot tubs (three accessible only by swimming through the pool, giving them a secluded feel), four waterfalls, and a man-made island. A separate zero-edge infinity pool offers quieter ocean views with available daybeds and cabanas for rental.

For younger guests, the dedicated children's pool features shallow, warm water and a waterslide. The pool deck accommodates over 500 lounge chairs, so finding a spot is rarely an issue even during peak season.

Beyond the pools, the resort sits directly on Kalapaki Beach, a sheltered bay with calm waters ideal for swimming, stand-up paddleboarding, boogie boarding, and learning to surf. Hawaiian cultural activities are included with the resort fee — lei making, ukulele lessons, hula classes, koi fish feeding, guided sunrise walks, yoga sessions, and aqua fit classes. The resort's signature "Drums & Dances of Polynesia" luau takes place right on Kalapaki Beach with toes-in-the-sand dining and fire dancing.

Spa & Wellness

The Alexander Day Spa & Salon occupies its own space within the resort complex, operating Monday through Saturday 8 AM to 6 PM and Sunday 8 AM to 4 PM. The spa offers a comprehensive menu of treatments including Lomi Lomi (traditional Hawaiian massage), Swedish, deep tissue, hot rock (Pohaku Lomi), Shiatsu, prenatal massage, aromatherapy, and reflexology. The distinctive Puhalo Steambath begins with ten minutes under a steam canopy, followed by a salt or papaya-pineapple scrub, and finishes with a massage.

Massages can be taken in the spa, at a beach cabana on Kalapaki Bay, or in-room for couples seeking privacy. Royal Sonesta guests receive a 10% discount on specialty massages as part of the resort fee inclusions. Spa packages combining massages, facials, and salon services range from approximately $220 to $440.

The resort's 24-hour fitness center features cardio equipment, weight machines, free weights, exercise mats, and stability balls. Complimentary wellness programming includes yoga classes, aqua fit sessions in the pool, and guided sunrise walks — all covered by the resort fee.

Dining

The resort's culinary scene spans four distinct restaurants plus a dedicated bar. Kukui's on Kalapaki Beach is the resort's signature restaurant, recently renovated with expanded menus inspired by local ingredients and island flavors. It features shaded outdoor seating with fire pits and views across both the pool and Kalapaki Bay, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Adjacent to Kukui's, the newly created Kai's Bar serves as the resort's social hub for handcrafted cocktails and light fare.

Duke's Kauai, named after legendary Hawaiian waterman Duke Kahanamoku, is a beloved institution nestled beside Kalapaki Bay, offering beachside cuisine with handcrafted cocktails and regular live music — it consistently ranks among the most popular restaurants in Lihue. Cafe Portofino provides an upscale counterpoint with authentic Northern Italian cuisine in an oceanfront setting, specializing in seafood and steaks.

The Royal Lanai serves double duty: mornings feature a grab-and-go breakfast with Kauai coffee and pastries, while evenings transform the space into "Sushi & Spirits," offering fresh sushi and cocktails with pool and ocean views. Room service is available for breakfast (7-11 AM) and dinner (5-10 PM).

Golf

The Ocean Course at Hokuala, located less than a mile from the resort with a complimentary shuttle, is Kauai's only Jack Nicklaus Signature course and features the longest stretch of oceanfront golf holes in all of Hawaii. The 18-hole championship layout winds through mango and guava groves on a dramatic clifftop property, with a challenging outward nine through tropical forest and a more forgiving links-style inward nine.

Golf Digest ranks it 13th in the state of Hawaii for 2025-26, and it has earned accolades including nominations for "North America's Best Golf Course." Green fees run upward of $300, and it is a cart-mandatory course to maintain a 4.5-hour pace of play. The Royal Sonesta's resort fee includes complimentary shuttle service to and from the course, making it exceptionally convenient for golfers staying at the resort.

Nearby Attractions

Kauai's east-shore location makes the Royal Sonesta an ideal base for exploring the entire Garden Island. Within minutes, guests can visit Wailua Falls, a stunning double-tiered waterfall just 7 miles from the resort, best photographed early morning when rainbows form at its base. The Fern Grotto, accessible by river boat on the Wailua River, and Lydgate Beach Park with its protected swimming areas are also nearby east-shore attractions.

Heading west, Waimea Canyon — dubbed the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific" — is approximately 38 miles away (about 1 hour 15 minutes). The canyon stretches over 14 miles and drops more than 3,600 feet, with multiple scenic lookouts and hiking trails. Continuing past Waimea Canyon, the road climbs to Kalalau Lookout for views of the legendary Na Pali Coast. Helicopter tours over both Waimea Canyon and the Na Pali Coast depart from Lihue Airport, just two miles away.

The North Shore, including Hanalei Bay and Princeville, is about a 45-minute drive and offers a distinctly different atmosphere with lush tropical scenery and quieter beaches.

Tips & Good to Know

The Preferred Ocean View rooms on higher floors offer the best combination of value and views, with private balconies overlooking both the ocean and the pool complex. Confirm your room includes a balcony at booking, as some ocean view categories do not. Garden View rooms, while the most affordable, have been noted by reviewers as feeling overpriced for the view — upgrading to Pool View or Ocean View is generally worth the difference.

Kauai's east shore enjoys more consistent weather than the wetter north shore. The dry season (April through September) offers the most sunshine and calmest ocean conditions at Kalapaki Bay. Be aware that cruise ships dock at nearby Nawiliwili Harbor, and on port days both the beach and Duke's restaurant can get crowded — check the cruise ship schedule if you prefer quieter days.

The $45/night resort fee is mandatory and adds up over a week-long stay, but it includes genuinely useful perks like the airport shuttle, fitness center, cultural activities, and dining discounts. Self-parking at $30/night is not included. The pool is not heated, which some guests find surprisingly cool. The Marriott Vacation Club (Kauai Beach Club) still operates on the same campus as a separate entity, which can cause confusion at check-in — make sure you head to the Royal Sonesta lobby, not the Marriott desk.
